Behaviour and Discipline - Bullying

The Head teacher, staff and Governors of St. David's School, Colwinston, recognise that all children, regardless of individual differences, have an entitlement to a caring, understanding and sympathetic learning environment and to create and maintain such an environment is one of the main priorities of the school.

Bullying is defined as: ’the wilful, conscious desire to hurt or frighten someone else.'

As a result of the professionalism, dedication and vigilance of staff, together with the school's positive approach to discipline and behaviour, St. David's is fortunate to have few incidents of bullying. However, even one such incident is a serious breach of the school rules - the school's policy emphasises that bullying, in any form - physical, emotional or psychological - is totally unacceptable.

At St. David's, all children are encouraged to report incidents of bullying or intimidation to a member of staff and most children feel confident to use this approach. However, in a minority of cases, incidents may remain unreported and where this occurs it is imperative that parents contact the Head teacher without delay, so that the appropriate action may be taken.

The school has introduced several pupil-led initiatives e.g."St. David's Guide to Good Behaviour" The School Watch Committee' and 'The Worry Box' which have been very effective in discouraging bullying and maintaining good behaviour.
