The broad
aims of the curriculum are concerned with the all-round development
of children as 'individuals, in all aspects:
intellectual,
emotional, social, physical, spiritual, moral.
Children
of primary age must, under requirements of the National Curriculum,
study three Core Subjects:
Mathematics,
English, Science.
In addition,
children also receive instruction in the Foundation Subjects:
Welsh,
History, Geography, Music, Computer Technology,
Art, Design Technology, P.E.
Each core
subject has clearly defined objectives, outlining what children should
know and be able to do at each stage of schooling. These are termed
Attainment Targets.
There are
different stages for different age groups. Primary education is concerned
with:-
Key
Stage 1 - (5 years -7 years approximately)
Key Stage 2 - (7 years - 11 years approximately)
The National
Curriculum was introduced into maintained schools in 1990 with the aim
of raising educational standards. In 1994 it was reviewed and slimmed
down and it will not be changed again before the year 2000.
Copies of
the National Curriculum documents for all subjects are available at
school, for parents' reference. The documents for the subjects of Welsh,
History, Geography, Art and Music are specific to Wales.
The National
Curriculum is not the whole of the school's curriculum. Pupils must
also study Religious Education and St David's also provides social
and personal education, health education and education about safety.
