Careers teacher - Mrs M McGeown
assisted by - Mrs A McGleenan
Careers education is an integral part of the curriculum. In the first two years it is delivered through Social Education with some cross-curricular input from subject classes. In Third Year there is a modular input through Social Education towards assisting the pupils with informed choice for Keystage 4. This is augmented by a Careers Conference for Third and Fifth Year pupils. The modular system continues in Fourth and Fifth Year. The local Careers Officer has individual contact with each student as an ongoing school facility. In August, Mrs McGeown and senior staff are in school after results are published to assist and advise the pupils.
The school is a member of the local Business Education Partnership. It has a branch of First Trust Bank run by the pupils under the supervision of the Dungannon branch. The Careers Department works closely with the Southern Education and Library Board and local business bodies to provide up-to-date, practical opportunity, challenge and information. School participates in the Young Enterprise scheme and shares competitions.
Personnel from the Universities here, and in Scotland visit school.
The A-level students have
time allocation and Internet access for Careers Guidance. Year 14 pupils
have Careers timetabled in groups and have individual attention and consultation
as required in the careers annex of the Sixth Form centre. Work experience
is organised in first year A-level by Mrs McGleenan. They write a
report on their sojourn to assist in analysing and evaluating their experiences.
Fifth years have individual interviews with a careers officer from Dungannon
Training and Employment Agency. They complete an interests profile
guiding them to an appropriate career area. Before Easter
there is individual attention to all fifth years.
