A Butler's Day at Soho House

History comes to life in beautiful downtown Handsworth….

It was Parents' Evening at St Michael's CE JI School and I had begun to realise just how successful our new History Project had been. Not for the first time in the evening a parent asked me:

"What's all this about butlers and servants?"

"Yes," continued Suneil's Auntie Sim, "and why do I have to hear about Soho House every minute of the day?"

"I had to go to Soho House myself," said another, "just to see if it was as good as I had been told."

How did this all begin?

Our School

St. Michael's School, in Piers Road, Handsworth, is a small inner city primary school of some 150 pupils. Its intake includes Muslim, Sikh, Hindu and African Caribbean children many of whose parents are the entrepreneurs who keep the Soho Road such a vibrant shopping area. It is a church school and it clearly understands its role as meeting the needs of its predominantly Muslim intake, with an emphasis on Language Development for the bilingual child.
