Stockwell Infants School is a small, two-form entry school for Infants. It is situated on Stockwell Road between Stockwell and Brixton tube stations; and is also served by buses P5, 2, 322 and 345. The Infants School occupies the ground floor of a three storey, Victorian building shared with Stockwell Junior School. Security gates and video surveillance systems operate on site 24 hours a day.

The Nursery is situated in a separate building within the school grounds and provides 100 part-time places. Children attend the Nursery from the age of three, providing that there is place available. It should be noted that there is no automatic right of transfer from the Nursery to full-time school. Parents who wish their children to attend full-time school make an application for a place in Reception.

The present Head Teacher has been with the school for 26 years and endeavours to maintain a long term core staff to ensure stability within the school. The school aims for and achieves a secure and calm atmosphere which enables children and staff to work hard, learn effectively, feel happy, confident and valued. We have high standards for our children and expect them to work hard and co-operate with all adults and with each other. We endeavour to create an environment that nurtures and fosters awareness of the individual differences and needs of others. We beleive that children learn best when we build on what they already know and reflect upon and value the rich diversity of our community in the curriculum. We hope to provide a welcoming atmosphere throughout the building and a pleasant working environment for both pupils and staff.

The children come mainly from local estates such as the Stockwell Park Estate and from homes on Stockwell Road and the surrounding streets. They come from a wide range of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds, including a well established Afro-Caribbean community. West African, Vietnamese and British children attend along with an increasing number from the European Union, in particular from Portugal and Madeira.

The Brixton Connections Project
Our school is on-line thanks to a project funded under Brixton Challenge. The project began over two years ago with the introduction of a PC and a phone line to each of the fifteen schools in the City Challenge area. This has now developed to each of these schools having three or more machines connected to the internet along with several successful school projects and the development of school websites.

It has been a fantastic learning opportunity for those involved, providing staff with a level of expertise they might not under other circumstances have acheived and has given pupils the opportunity to widen their horizons through communication with classes from around the world.
