Tarves Primary School serves the children of the village and the surrounding area, and is situated some 16 miles from the City of Aberdeen and 7 miles from Ellon. The School's catchment area is quite extensive and children from the outlying areas are transported by bus to and from school.
The village, with its traditional buildings, has seen three main housing estates built around it. The most recent of these estates being just recently developed.
The school building itself dates from 1911 and has been enlarged at some point in time. It has served as a Junior Secondary/Primary School until 1979, when secondary teaching was transferred to Ellon.
The accommodation consists of a central hall, which is used as a dining and activity area. From this area there is access to six classrooms, a Staff Room/Resource Base, and the Head Teacher's Office. An additional classroom is situated on a lower level next to the Library/Television Room. The School Office is also situated in this west wing of the school.
The school has its own kitchen, in an adjacent annexe, where the dinners for both Barthol Chapel and Tarves Primary are cooked.
Behind the school, and facing south, the school has its own football pitch and an all-weather surface which is shared with the community. The children have their physical education lessons in the Melvin Hall, situated some 150 yards from the school.
The roll of the school has fluctuated over recent years from around 160 - 193 pupils, catering for children from five to twelve years of age. Thereafter the majority of children move to secondary schooling at Ellon Academy.
Tarves School has enjoyed a reputation of providing a number of extra curricular activities, and being actively involved with the community.
Parent/Guardian helpers are involved in a number
of ways in the school, and regular social meetings, in the form of coffee
mornings, are a particular favourite with the older members in the village,
who can meet for a chat, and see what is going on at the school.
