The project undertaken is
a SOCRATES Community Action Programme aiming to promote co-operation in
the field of education in the European Community. It has been funded under
COMMENIUS ACTION 1 and has been in operation since 1996.
Our original project summary outline
indicated that we would:
Develop a linguistic awareness through
a novel and inovative approach to language learning which would be pupil
led and utilises new technologies such as fax, e-mail etc.
Increase pupil awareness of the similarities
and differences in language and culture through local research activities
and the exchange of information and experiences.
Embed the European Dimension across the
curriculum through activity based learning, in particular within learning
situations in which children can take responsibility for teaching other
children in partner schools.
Two classes were originally involved
in the project from Tarves School, a Primary 5 class, and a Primary 7.
The younger class was to build up its links with a similar aged class in
Norway, there being 29 children in Tarves School, and 18 in Hjuksebo Skole
in the respective classes. The older class of 31 pupils would communicate
with a class of 18 in Skaggeberg Skolan in Sunne, Sweden.
Initially it was felt that the
whole of the first year would be used to prepare and plan the project,
but it soon became apparent from the preparatory visit and the enthusiasm
felt by everyone, that far more would be achieved, and indeed this was
the case.
