ABERDEEN CITY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT and
GRAMPIAN CAREERS
An important inservice event
EDUCATION FOR WORK,
CAREERS AND THE CURRICULUM

21 February 2001 (inservice day)
Summerhill Education Centre Conference Room
9.00am to 4.00pm

"Education for work has been identified as a priority for all Scotland’s young people. It is one of the key purposes of the curriculum in all Scottish schools, along with a very small number of other important themes, with which it overlaps, such as personal, social and health education and education for citizenship."
(Education for Work in Schools; HM Inspectors of Schools, 2000)

context for the course

This one-day course is being offered because education for work is one of the key national priorities, and is important for all young people. It will increasingly be one of the areas through which the success of schools will be judged.

A separate half-day seminar for headteachers has been held by Aberdeen City Education Department and Grampian Education Business Partnership on 29 January 2001. This course is intended to complement that seminar.

what is it for?

The purposes of this one-day course are to assist participants in

identifying the elements of an effective education for work programme
determining ways of improving their own programmes of education for work
becoming more familiar with national guidelines and resources for education for work
developing further ways of working in partnership with others to develop education for work

who should participate?

This event is open to anyone who is involved in education for work. Although it is geared more to young people of secondary school age, staff from primary schools are very welcome to participate. It is expected that the course would be particularly important for the following people

Careers Advisers
Guidance Teachers in secondary schools (at least two per school should attend to gain maximum benefit – although even more would be very welcome)
other teachers who see that education for work is relevant to the whole curriculum
those with a management responsibility for Guidance/PSE/education for work
