MPH Education Unit- resourced by the Somerset Education Services

About Us

The Education Unit provides a friendly but professional service to children who are in hospital. The children gain a fixed point in the disorienting world of a hospital & we are able to lessen the effects of the break from their normal school. Just as important is the social contact, which helps both pupil, parents & hospital staff. We teach all children of school age who are well enough to receive education and who have been in hospital for 3 working school days. Children with learning difficulties and children who have been readmitted come into school from day one.
Children are taught in our schoolroom, in beds, in wheelchairs or in isolation cubicles. We teach all children across the ability range from all types of school.
We liaise with the pupil's school if he/she is a long stay patient or is admitted regularly for treatment. We maintain close links between schools, parents and home tutors to ensure continuity of work and to minimize the effects of isolation.
We work closely with the Children's Education Unit at Yeovil District Hospital.

Our Aims

Facilities

We occupy a section at the end of the Children's Ward. Here we have a large collection of resource material for all stages & subjects of the National Curriculum. We also have several computers, with many educational software packages. The Internet is available, & e-mail is a very helpful link to children's parent schools (& homes)
