The Spirit and Purpose of Magdalen Farm
The Ecological Education Partnership at Magdalen Farm offers opportunities for educational residential experience founded upon ecological principles in a setting which strives towards sustainability. The partnership's purpose will be to provide educational opportunities which:
- encourage reflection on and critique of the current imbalance between human consumption, wastefulness and inequality and what the earth can sustain;
- allow participants to discover through personal experience their understanding of the natural world and our place within it;
- enable concepts from the school curriculum to be explored, developed and applied through a range of learning activities based upon outdoor experience and immersion in the sustainable practices of the Magdalen Farm environment;
- allow principles and concepts learnt through experience of the local landscape and the farms facilities to be transferred and transformed to the home environment and the everyday lives of visiting participants;
- encourage participants to find new meaning in their lives and restore control over the destiny of humanity and the earth, through their acquired skills insights and experiences;
In putting these purposes into practice we will be guided by:
- a respect for the natural world which encompasses all life forms and landscapes for their own sake as well as for their value in enriching human life.
- an appreciation of the probable limits to our complete understanding of natural processes leading to the precautionary principle of limiting human interference in the natural world.
- a recognition of the value of both science and emotional experience in promoting our understanding of the earth
- an equal respect for all human life which encompasses those who have gone before us, those who are yet to be borne and the neighbouring community as well as those living in distant places.
- a recognition of the interconnections between Magdalen Farm and the local environment.
