The County of Somerset
Aerial view of Watchet (29K)
| Watchet is situated in the picturesque county of Somerset, South-West England. It is an ancient town with many legends and much history of its own. (See History) It is situated on the coast and has grown around its extensive harbour and docks. Since the closure of the docks, Watchet's main industry has been the Wansbrough Paper Mill.
Despite the loss of one of its major industries and resulting high unemployment, Watchet continues to thrive. It has a population of 3,500-4,000 and a distinct identity. Local government is maintained from West Somerset District Council (based at Williton) and Somerset County Council. Knights Templar School is situated on Liddymore Road, an area away from the town centre, with shopping facilities for the surrounding houses. (See Dave "the Mace".)
