This is the nature garden in March. When we first looked at it things didn't appear to have changed much since January and February. But when we looked closer things were happening. There were a lot of new creatures in the pond - we saw fishes, tadpoles and beetles. New plants were appearing in the woods around the pond, we even saw some flowers.

Stickleback
Our fish is a stickleback. We found it in the pond and most of fish live in the pond if they are not chucked around and killed . They come out of off the weeds when the sun is shining . They are very fast swimmers the stickleback that we saw had one spike the most spikes they can have is six spikes .

Pond weed is very important to pond life, the weed changes all the bad air in the pond to clean oxygen which the fish breaths, it is a green colour. It spreads itself around the pond in big clumps and tangles itself together. The pond weed is a more hardy plant than others, it grows most ponds so well because it doesn't need to be looked after that well and it often camouflages itself in the pond. By Ieuan and Mark

Tadpoles
When we went down to the nature garden in March 1999,I found some tadpoles. They still hadn't grown any legs, because they were quite young. When tadpoles are newly hatched, tiny gills take air from the water, this is how the young tadpoles breath. When tadpoles grow older their tails grow longer, then they will be able to swim a lot faster. By Annie
