Key Stage 1  (awaiting update)

There is generous learning accommodation for Key Stage One pupils. A large, airy classroom with neutral light-wood decor creates the impression of a gallery. This is supplemented by an area for exploration and creation with messier materials. Pupils also have access to two reading areas and a library. Children can use one of nine computers at any time to enrich their learning together with digital cameras and video cameras.

Our Staff

Children in Key Stage One work in one mixed age range class. The class teacher is supported by a part-time classroom assistant. The headteacher also provides additional teaching for the oldest pupils in the school. This means pupils most commonly work in groups with plenty of direction, guidance and support. This was recognised by OFSTED as an outstanding feature of our school which made a significant contribution to academic success.

Our Pedagogy

In Key Stage One we are seeking to create a curriculum that is rigorous in the basics but also practical, creative and challenging. Where possible we forge cross curricular links and find real-life goals to give learning a purpose.

As in The Early Years Unit pupils have opportunities to follow their own interests and can access construction, small world and role play apparatus as well as wet and dry media and a range of creative resources. They also experience intensive small group teaching in Literacy, Numeracy and Science as well as the other Foundation Subjects. We are committed to a rich curriculum and there are several opportunities every year to take part in Educational Visits and special events such as Dance Festivals and School Council Conferences.

Pupils in Year 2 have the opportunity to participate in a two night residential experience on Greenwell Farm in Wolsingham.

There is an Art Club on Wednesday night for Year 1 pupils and a Computer Club also on Wednesday night for Year 2 pupils.
