Managing Change in Schools

The past decade has been a time of radical change in UK schools. Educationalists have been charged with introducing a range of innovations:

Some Recent Educational Innovations

GCSE
LMS
The National Curriculum
OFSTED Inspections
The Revised National Curriculum
League Tables
GNVQ
Opting Out
TVEI
Staff Appraisal
Assessment
Records of Achievement

Change is often welcomed by staff, but on occasions change can be resisted:

To diminish any resistance to change, managers must persuade teachers of the benefits the proposed changes will bring. They should also ensure that teachers have the opportunity to influence the changes. Such influence can be exercised by forming a working group, the members of which should:

  • Be respected amongst the staff as a whole

  • Have a positive attitude towards change

  • Be open to new ideas

  • Be capable of generating creative solutions

  • Be aware of the practical implications of any solution
