Evaluate an Ancient Egyptian Box

Why this Task is Useful

By evaluating an Ancient Egyptian box you can see how boxes of that time were decorated. In this way you can get ideas about how to decorate your box. Remember, you want your box to look real or authentic i.e. as if it was made in Ancient Egyptian Times.

You need to ask yourself many of the same questions you asked in the previous exercise:
  • What does it hold?
  • How much does it cost?
  • What materials is it made from?
  • What type of lid? Are there other types?
  • Is the material finished? i.e. varnished, painted etc
  • Does it do what it is supposed to do?
  • Is it a good design? Why?
  • How are the materials joined together?
  • How id it made?
  • Is it attractive? Why?
  • Is it strong? Why?
  • How is the lid held closed?
  • Why is it this size and not bigger or smaller?

Also, you need to study the decoration of the box and ask:

  • What colours are used?
  • Which hieroglyphic symbols are used?
  • Which religious symbols are used?
  • How are border patterns used?
  • How are people depicted?
