Count Me In!

The BBC's biggest social action campaign of 1997, Count Me In aimed to persuade adults with numeracy problems to improve their skills and raise awareness of the importance of mathematics in everyday life. The campaign took place in January 1997.

The campaign had been devised in collaboration with the Basic Skills Agency in the light of research suggesting that 20 per cent of adults have numeracy problems.

A selection of motivational 'shorts' used humour to encourage viewers to call for support materials and take action to improve their maths skills. The sketches showed people grappling with maths in everyday life - from working out knitting patterns to calculating darts scores.

Wide ranging programmes from familiar BBC series such as Tomorrow's World, The National Lottery Live and Noel's House Party featured special slots, bringing numeracy and maths to life.
