| Several of Birmingham's Environmental Centres
are keen to be involved in the "Year of Numeracy". Schools wishing to
participate can book their visits with the individual Heads of Centres. Further
information 0121 235 3890/4618 · The Stables: Maths in the Environment An opportunity for schools to plan a maths day in the great outdoors! The actual content and format can be negotiated with and supported by the Head of Centre. · Botanical Gardens Base: Looking for Links - KS1/2 Investigating the connections between maths and the plant environments at the Gardens. This will be an opportunity for pupils to use and apply their maths skills through a range of activities, including trails. · Chapman's Hill School Farm: KS2 Pupils will undertake the usual practical activities at the farm (feeding various animals, observing daily or seasonal farming work, etc). However, the focus will be on maths in action - learning that maths and statistics are crucial to the efficient running of a farm. · Money Lane School Farm: KS1 When visiting Money Lane School Farm, schools will be encouraged to use one of the two Maths trails available, ie a Nursery/Reception trail or a Y1/2 trail, to help develop back in school their skills in number, shape, data handling etc. · Hams Hall Environmental Studies Centre Pupils can be involved in: - surveys creating data that can be store / presented / analysed - maths trail in the woodland and walled garden (map skills, ordering, sorting, counting, collating etc.) · Museum and Art Gallery, Science Museum, Aston Hall, Blakesley Hall, Sarehole Mill, Nature Centre: KS1, KS2. Try out maths in an historical context! Pupils can participate in Egyptian maths at the Museum, estimate and measure and follow a maths trail at the Science Museum, use and apply maths skills in a range of activities at Aston Hall, try problem solving at Blakesley Hall, explore maths at the Mill and data handling at the Nature Centre. |
