In 1997, Birmingham celebrated a "Year of Numeracy". This is how it all began...
The Year of Numeracy aims high!
| "In launching the
Year of Numeracy I wish all schools increasing success in improving pupils' numeracy
skills, and I call upon parents and the business community to support all our efforts
during the year to improve numeracy." Councillor Sandra Jenkinson, Education Committee Chair. |
The primary aim this year is to improve
numeracy throughout all the schools in Birmingham. In order to achieve this it is vital
that all schools within the city have an equal opportunity to take part in a range of
strategies that will be developed. To this end a variety of activities are planned that will span the whole year, ensuring that the focus of this Year of Numeracy is kept very much to the fore in people's minds, whilst at the same time demonstrating the vital importance of numeracy in all aspects of our lives. The endeavours and successes of all those children taking part will be celebrated, and encouragement given to assist them in achieving yet higher goals. Throughout the year we will be asking both schools and pupils to look at what has been added to previous achievements, and to set themselves higher goals and targets |
The partnerships developed during this year
will be with all those involved in the learning enterprise: pupils, schools, the support
services, parents, local business and commerce and the further and higher education
institutions within the city. This strategy will allow us to build the year of Numeracy
into a shining example of Birmingham's success in developing their 'Years of...'
initiatives. During this year we hope to capture and record the many and varied projects and strategies around numeracy that proliferate in this city, and at the same time add an exciting new spark, drawing together learning communities in celebrating the success of our young people |
