Targets

Tim Brighouse, Birmingham's Chief Education Officer, writes about setting targets for numeracy.

Percentage of 11year olds, tested at the end of key stage two, achieving level 4 and above in mathematics compared to Birmingham's millennium target.

Birmingham has breathtakingly ambitious targets for the present Year 3 pupils who will take their curriculum tests in the year 2000.

It is worth emphasising that unlike national education targets these are the schools' own. We have no doubt that these targets will be realised, not least because of our teacher's skill, commitment and energy.

Certificates are being produced by the city as calebratory awards which outline the habits of experienced and established young mathematicians.
