| A project has been running at Watermill School in conjunction with South Birmingham
College. The project is called "The Magic
of Number" and involved parents and dinner supervisors finding out how children
learn about maths. They had to make and design games which they then tested in school. Central News TV filmed the project in action. |
Pupils visit the supermarket:Pupils had to plan for a fruit salad costing no more than £2.50. At the supermarket, half the class weighed the fruit they had listed, they checked on their estimated cost and finally came up with their overall total. The two groups whose fruit salads came to £2.50 or as close to it as possible, bought the fruit and made the fruit salad back at school. The other half of the class looked at a range of healthy snacks and they checked prices ; they listed those which they thought were best value for money. All Year 3 pupils looked at how supermarkets display food items to get customers to buy things(special offers, reward card points etc.). This activity was reported by the EVENING MAIL, THURSDAY MAY 8, 1997. The title is 'PUPILS STORE LESSON' and this is what the article says:Children have been getting to grips with the trials and tribulations of shopping-during an educational link-up with a Birmingham supermarket.Sainsbury's store in Oak Tree Lane , Selly Oak, threw its doors open to several groups of pupils from local primary schools. The children, aged seven and eight, were invited to try their hand at all aspects of supermarket life ranging from stacking shelves and the checkout till to selecting fruit to buy. A Birmingham education spokesman said: 'It was a fun way of teaching young children about shopping and what goes on in supermarkets.'One of the pupils challenges was to produce a fruit salad after being given £2.50 to buy the fruit they needed. |
