Year Of Numeracy 1997 |

Celebrate the "Year of Numeracy" by organising a "Maths Week" at your school. It can be really enjoyable and motivating for your pupils while at the same time be a good way of showing parents and the community what kind of mathematics is taking place in your school. Many parents still remember mathematics as they were taught it at school and such memories are not always favourable. We need to show that mathematics has changed its approach if not its content. We can also celebrate the achievements being made by pupils in the subject. Schools who have organised maths weeks in previous years have shown the great variety of activities which work well. Some schools have produced brilliant mathematical displays while others have suspended normal timetabled lessons for practical maths activities |

All Birmingham schools are encouraged to organise a "Maths Week" beginning on 10th November 1997. A group of teachers have met to begin planning various activities that could be included in the week. Their initial ideas are as follows:
Maths week pack across all key stages; To include a Maths Drama/Language Alive or other; A competition across KS 1,2,3 and 4; Storytellers with a mathematical emphasis; Secondary/Primary link project; Industry project; Link up with maths trails; Ensure that IT is part of the week; Opportunity for mathematical displays.
The above activities are to be mainly school based with the resourcing coming from school. A substantial resource book has been produced by the teachers on the planning group. This booklet went to the printers in July and should be in Birmingham schools in September 1997. It has been part financed by Birmingham City Supplies Organisation who have included pages from their catalogue indicating the mathematical resources which can be purchased from them to support mathematics in school.
