BIRMINGHAM YEAR OF NUMERACY 1997

Aim: To improve numeracy in Birmingham through its schools.

Objectives:

1. All schools participate in the year

2. Pupils' achievements in numeracy are acknowledged, to act as a stimulus for further improvement

3. Parents are enabled to support their children's numeracy more effectively

4. The Year generates the positive climate necessary for numeracy issues to be debated vigorously and constructively

5. Birmingham business and commerce both inform and support the year

6. Indicators of pupils' mathematical attainment show improvement against previous best and compare favourably with national trends

7. All agencies involved with children inform and support the year

8. The year builds on the success and lessons of the previous "Years of .. " in Birmingham

9. Birmingham institutions of further and higher education inform and support the year

10. The year provides a platform for identifying and sharing new ways and strategies for improving numeracy

11. Teachers' confidence, teaching skills and understanding in numeracy is enhanced

12. Understanding about the contributions of different cultures to numeracy is promoted

13. Information technology is exploited for promoting, communicating and as a tool for learning

14. The year will encourage improved communication, continuity and progression in learning between key stages, particularly 2 and 3.
