We are a committed department which achieves consistently high results, particularly at GCSE.

Departmental members adhere to the National Curriculum, and pupils in all years are regularly assessed with regard to their skills in three essential skills : reading, writing and oral communication.

Theatre visits are arranged to support the reading of texts in school, and recent trips include : Bath, to watch a dramatised production of `To Kill a Mockingbird' ;Stratford, to see the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of`The Merchant of Venice'; and Tiverton, for a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company of `Romeo and Juliet'. Current future plans include the Royal Shakespeare Company's `The Tempest' in Plymouth, Willy Russell's acclaimed `Blood Brothers' in London, and a visit to Exeter to watch John Hegley, a leading contemporary poet.
