U.K. Maths Challenge
9 highly achieving Year 11 students who have in 5 years of taking the U.K. Maths Challenge, gained 18 Gold, 13 Silver and 7 Bronze certificates between them. |

Curriculum
Key Stage 3
Pupils study Mathematics in sets throughout the school. Set 1- 4 follow the Understanding Maths Scheme (books 1 - 3). Set 5 undertake Steps in Understanding Maths and a small learning difficulties group follow the S.M.P. individualized learning .
In each of the Year groups 7, 8 and 9 pupils regularly undertake 6 exams which are assessed against N.C. criteria.
Key Stage 4
The course book for Set 1 in Years 10 and 11 is Higher G.C.S.E. Mathematics (D.Rayner), whilst Sets 2, 3, 4 and some of Set 5 follow the Intermediate version.
The Foundation group is served by a mixture of appropriate texts and the S.M.P. Graduated Assessment Green Course.
Formal assessment consists of 2 separate G.C.S.E. standard exams in Year 10 and a full G.C.S.E. style mock exam in Year 11.

S.M.P.Graduated Assessment (OCR) for those pupils with learning difficulties.
Summer 1998 G.C.S.E. exam results
60% of the year group gained A* to C grades in Mathematics. (National average is 47%). 99% of the year group gained G.C.S.E. grades A* to G.
G.C.S.E. Coursework.
Key Stage 3.
Ma1 is assessed regularly in years 7, 8 and 9 with each year group undertaking a variety of open ended short tasks, where small group work and individual learning styles are encouraged.
A longer investigation of 2 weeks duration is also undertaken in each of years 8 & 9.
Key Stage 4.
Students submit two tasks for (Ma1) assessment and these can contribute a maximum of 20% towards their G.C.S.E. grade.
The investigations are selected from the Ed-Excel G.C.S.E. exam boards bank of tasks.
One G.C.S.E. task is undertaken in Year 10 and one in Year 11.
I.C.T.
Lower school pupils are time-tabled by the Department to access the schools network of 30 computers. Each set in a year group spend a double lesson (1 hour 10 minutes) in each of two consecutive weeks exploring a variety of spreadsheet tasks. Their work is monitored and assessed.
At Key Stage 4 the structure is less formal, individual students use I.T. to support their course work, individual classes explore omnigraph and a G.C.S.E. revision exam bank of questions.
