music department
Staff
The department has on staff Mr Lee Baines (as head of department) and Mr Nick Rumney in a part-time capacity. In addition there is a peripatetic team of ten instrumental teachers of drums, flute, brass, etc.
The school hosts seven teacher-run ensembles:
- Wind Band
- Brass Group
- String Group
- Jazz Group
- Folk Group
- Choir
- Junior Band (just for year 7s)
...plus a number of student-run rock/pop groups.
With the exception of the Junior Band each contains pupils across all year groups. The groups take part in many community events such as Cullompton Farmers' Market, Butterleigh Craft Fair, Hemyock Summer Fair and contributes to the activities held at Uffculme School such as the Antique Fair.
Concerts
The music department has organised many concerts. In addition to a main event each term there are less formal occasions such as recitals given by the G.C.S.E. students in preparation for their exam. For the benefit of primary school children each concert is preceded by an afternoon open rehearsal which the feeder schools are welcome to attend.
The Folk Group took part in last year's East Devon Schools Prom and represented the school with style. A year 11 student, Luke Norland, won second prize in last year's Devon Young Composers competition. His piece was a jazz trio for two trumpets and French horn.
G.C.S.E.
Unusual steps have currently been taken to guarantee success amongst G.C.S.E. students. All candidates take the exam in year 10 as an additional option. In preparation for this a session on Tuesdays after school has been set up in year 9. Currently sixteen pupils are taking this course. There are also fourteen studying music in year 10.
In the GCSE exams last year in which five pupils were entered, the candidates were very succesful in achieving a 100% A*-C pass rate (2 A*, 2 A and 1 B).
