Housing and household chores.

The two ladies are busy with their washing machine. This was a tub with a mangle attachment. The woman on our right is holding a poss-stick with which she would agitate the clothes when in the soapy water in the tub. Washing day, often a Monday, was a very tiring day. Washing was hard work.

The two children are playing in the front street with their tin bath. The gutter runs down the middle of the street and takes the rain water away. The colliery streets also had toilets and coal houses across a dirt back lane. The children are the Snaith twins, aged 2.

This beautiful portrait is very old. It shows a young woman sitting in front of a huge open fire. Part of the fender can be seen on the right. The girl is Olive May Newson aged 18. She was born in 1893 in Esh Winning. She died in 1981.
