History page 1. The oldest photographs

This was taken in Suffolk, well before the turn of the century. Many families moved up into the Durham coalfield looking for work as the mines opened. Some of Mrs McEleavey’s family can be seen in the photo. Some of Mr Ord’s great, great grandparents also moved up from Suffolk.

Possibly taken around 1900, this shows a proud mum and dad, Mrs Richard's grandparents, Michael and Francis Hall. The baby is their son, James aged 6 months. Mrs Richards says that boys wore dresses until they were about 5 years old. The photographer's studio probably had a range of backgrounds. This family chose a classic architectural scene.
