Chickens and Geese |

In 2005 the Warriner School Farm become the custodians of a number of rare breeds as a partner in the Total Butler Conservation Breeding Programme under the auspices of the Rare Breed Survival Trust. In addition the farm possesses a range of traditional and autosexing breeds of poultry. The Old English Pheasant Fowl is listed on the RBST Watchlist in Category 1, critical, with less than 100 adult females.

The chickens are housed in a traditional chicken house (with outside runs) and a range of arks of different sizes. The different breeds are kept separate so that the eggs can be sold as fertile to other schools and individuals.

Pupils are responsible for feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs. A number of eggs are kept for incubation and the chicks sold or kept to replenish the farm’s own stock. The geese roam the school grounds in addition to the farm and have been known to attack teachers and pupils! |
