Admissions and Secondary transfer

Entry to the Nursery

We take children on to our nursery waiting list at two years old (proof of date of birth is necessary.) They are usually admitted into our part-time nursery at approximately three and a half to four years. The nursery is oversubscribed and not every child gets a nursery place. We do have a policy for nursery admissions and this is available for you to see from the Head Teacher.

If you do get a place for your child we have a settling in period. This means parents will be asked to stay with their child for the first few days, some need longer. A place in our nursery does not guarantee a place in the reception class although we will do our best to accommodate your child.

Starting School for the First Time

In Newham, children start primary school in September if they are five in September, October, November or December. If they are five between January and August they will start school in January. In the term before your child is due to tart school you will hear from us whether a place is available or not. If you are offered a place, write or call to accept it within one week otherwise you might lose it. If you accept the place you will be invited to meet the Head Teacher and the reception teacher. If we have more applications than places, Newham Council Education Department has to allocate places between children.

It does so in this order:

  1. Children who live locally and have a brother or sister in the school.
  2. Other children who live locally.
  3. Children who do not live locally but have a brother or sister in the school.
  4. Other children whether they live in Newham or not.

'Living locally' means parents living in the catchment area of the school. (Ask at the school to see if you live in our catchment area.

Moving to the School from another Primary School

Apply as soon as you can. Make an appointment to see the Head Teacher and bring proof of your child's birth date and your address. The Head Teacher will tell you whether there is a place for your child and if not, why not.

We will offer you a place as long as we are not full in your child's age group. If we are full then we suggest you try other local schools or we will refer you to Newham Education Department who will tell you what to do next. Parents considering applying for a place at William Davies are welcome to visit the school however it will be necessary to make an appointment so that someone is free to show you around.

Transfer to Secondary School

Pupils transfer to secondary school the September after they are eleven (the end of year six.) Our feeder schools are:

Plashet Comprehensive School (for girls)

Lister Comprehensive School (for boys)

Parents do have the right to choose another school. If a place is available your child will transfer to the school of your choice. If a place is not available you have the right of appeal.
