. . . FLAG FEN FINDS. . .

Excavations at Flag Fen, described as Britain’s most important Bronze Age site, and one of the best in Europe, started in 1982, after a piece of timber was spotted protruding through peat below the Roman road.

The timber, about 3,000 years old, ran for about 80 yards and marked the start of a decade of discoveries revealing a pre-historic place of worship, built on a floating wooden platform in the Fen.

Since 1982, many object have been find or discovered for example animal bones, bronze sword, tool such as axes and many more. Once these have been excavated there are mapped and photographed before being removed from the ground . Once out of the ground they are re-photographed, drawn and, where necessary, preserved by a conservator, either in our own facilities or at a laboratory elsewhere.

Each find is entered into a computer. Eventually the more exciting or unusual objects are placed on display in the Visitor centre.

Here are some example of swords which have been found at Flag Fen.
