Call To halt site's Cash THE leading Tory on Peterborough City council Today called for cash to be withheld from the Flag Fen Bronze Age village - despite threats from the site boss to close it. Acting Conservative leader, Neville Sanders branded the site - which experts say is unique and one of the finest in Europe - as one of "appeal only to specialists and of limited value as a tourist attraction ." Yesterday the Evening Telegraph revealed exclusively that Flag fen boss Francis Pryor will close down the site of the council doesn't come up with £60,000 grant for a visitors' centre. But the cash-starved council is already looking at cutting more than £3 million off its budget to meet Government poll tax limits. Already the Lido swimming pool, a number of play centres, and scores of jobs are at risk. Crunch day for Flag Fen will be January 15, when members of the environment committee will meet to decide whether or not to give the grant. Mr Sanders said : "At best the £60,000 should be given as a loan, a grant." "As a tourist attraction it is of limited appeal to the general public and poll tax payer shouldn't be forking out for it" Labour's Sally Dalgarno has already spoken out against giving Flag Fen the cash - saying protecting vital services should be a priority. But Tory John Holdick described the archaeological dig as "a valuable asset for the city" and pledged to support it." |
