. . . . . Royal visitor’s journey back to the city’s future . . . .

A ROYAL visitor got a look at the past and a glimpse of hopes for the city's economic future during a tour of Peterborough.

The Duke of Gloucester first port of call yesterday was Peterborough Museum, where he met staff plus invited guests and pupils from the city’s Bishop Creighton School.

He was also given a print of the late 18th-century painting by Nathan Fielding showing children playing by the old Town Bridge, acquired by the museum last year.

The Duke then performed his first official opening of the day at Flag Fen, when the did the honours at the Hudson Barn, which is used for storage and hosting school parties. The new Museum of the Bronze Age was also part of the tour.

After lunch at Flag Fen, the royal party, which included Peterborough Mayor John Holdich, Mayoress Barbara Holdich, the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and the Lord Lieutenant, James Crowden, went back to the city centre, and Business Link Greater Peterborough, the one-stop business help and information service that has been at Stuart House since January.

The Duke and 50 invited guests were told that Business Link had already worked with more than 100 local firms add that, in the words of marketing manager Michael Dicks "everything is in place to start offering a world-beating business support organisation.

The Duke toured the facilities and met staff before unveiling commemorative plaque."I have watched Peterborough grow for many years however splendid the planning you can't grow without the institutions to make sure talent is put to the best use," he said.
