THE METLINK 2000 SURVEY OF THE MICROCLIMATE OF WELLS

During January and February 2000, the Lower Sixth Geographers at Wells Cathedral School were involved in a detailed survey of the microclimate of the Wells area.

The aim of the project was to see whether temperatures in the city were higher than at the homes of ten day pupils. Simple max-min thermometers were placed in the back gardens of the day pupils, and a trial run was undertaken during the second week of January, testing the thermometers (and their users!) to ensure that accurate readings were made.

As a result, the daily max. and min. readings were taken each day over a three week period, and compared with the readings taken at the school`s automatic weather station, and at the home in Wells of another one of the day pupils.

The locations outside Wells where readings were taken were:

Theale

Bishop Sutton

Pilton

Yarley

Dulcote

Glastonbury

Dinder

Shepton Mallet
