The quiet village of Charney Bassett is situated near
the Cotswolds, in
open country beside the winding river Ock. It is in the North of the Vale of the
White Horse, in
Ganfield Hundred near the city of
Oxford. There has been a settlement
here since
Anglo-Saxon times,
the earliest surviving record being a grant of lands to the abbot of
Abingdon Abbey in 811 AD. The
land was originally mainly marsh and the meaning of Charney is "Cearn-isle" or
"the island beside the river Chearn".
To the north of the village is Cherbury camp, an Iron age fortification, the meaning of Cherbury being "the barrow beside the river Chearn".
St. Peter's is the village Church and has some sections as old as the 12th. century.
Close to the church is the charming rural
water mill
built in 1807.
The village is also home to Charney Manor built as a grange for Abingdon Abbey when it owned extensive lands around the village.
Richard Stanway is Sonia's Son.
