The Adventures of LiteStar
An interactive story of a holoboy and his friends
The Beginning
By Steve Crisp
Introduction
LiteStar knew Jenny would be excited when she heard about his idea for a new adventure.
She wasn't like the other children who came to play on the holodeck, Jenny was special,
she made him feel like a human too.
The mining community on asteroid 9c5 hadn't seen a supply ship from Earth for more than a
year now. All the adults were worried that something was wrong back home and Jenny
remembered a news story last summer about a deadly virus that the doctors were trying to
find a cure for, "It's strange that it hasn't been mentioned since" she thought.
It was Saturday and Jenny ran to the holodeck. She hurriedly typed her password into the
computer terminal and jumped through the force field as it slid open. "LiteStar,
LiteStar" she called as she ran through the grassy fields, "where are
you?". "Up here" LiteStar waved from a branch six feet above her head.
"I've got a great idea for an adventure today" he said as he floated down to the
ground beside her, (holoboys can do that sort of thing). " All week I've been
programming a virtual time machine and I want to show it to you". "Oh boy!"
Jenny giggled as he took her by the hand and ran towards his lab.
"Look over there" he gestured as he typed in the first commands of his program.
A low hum began to come from a round ball that appeared at the end of the room. It almost
reached the ceiling and looked like it was made of very fine silvery fibres that shimmered
with lots of colours. "Wow!" exclaimed Jenny as she ran her fingers over
the threads. "Get in" called LiteStar tapping on his keyboard and opening a door down the side of the sphere.
Inside was a huge room, much bigger than the ball looked from the outside. There wasn't
much in there except two very comfortable chairs, a big screen and a computer terminal.
LiteStar appeared at the door. "Like it?" he smiled. "What will it
do?" she asked. "Go anywhere in time and space" he replied excitedly.
"Let's see if it works" he whispered as he sat down in one of the chairs and
placed the keyboard on his lap. "I wonder if we will be back for tea" Jenny
thought as she sat down next to him and watched the big screen as it came to life.
