Geography Policy

Introduction

We believe that Geography is a tool of learning and communication. Geography is essentially about the study of places, the human and physical processes which shape them, and the people who live in them. Skills developed through Geography help pupils make sense of their surroundings and the wider world.

Aims

We aim to help pupils develop:

  • knowledge and understanding of places and themes including patterns and processes;
  • geographical skills, including inquiry;
  • geographical attitudes and values;
  • a sense of identity through learning about the U.K. and its’ relationships with other countries.

Differentiation

We aim to encourage all pupils to reach their full potential through the provision of varied opportunities. We recognise that our curriculum planning must allow pupils to gain a progressively deeper understanding and competency as they move through our school.

Equal Opportunities

All children will be given equal access to Geography irrespective of race, gender, creed, level of ability or nationality. Mutual respect and tolerance for all cultures will be promoted through the study of Geography.

Evaluation and Assessment

The assessment of Geography is an integral part of teaching. It allows teachers to identify what has been learnt and to monitor pupils’ progress. Assessment should also diagnose and identify ways of over coming particular learning difficulties. Examples of work will be collated in the pupil’s individual profile.
