Sonia Crisp Cert. Ed. B.A.
Headmistress
Welford and Wickham Primary School
Berkshire, England
For the majority of my teaching career I taught in a small school in a village setting
having close links with both the surrounding community and the Church. As this was my home
town I also had close relationships with many parents of the children in my care, which
proved to be a great asset. I feel that it is most important for the children in a school
to feel secure in the knowledge that their teachers and parents are friends and that any
problem, no matter how small it may appear, can be discussed openly.
My teaching approach is child-centred, maintaining a high standard of work and behaviour.
The discipline within my classroom comes from self-motivation, for I feel that if children
have a sense of 'belonging' to a school society, then they will be motivated to maintain
high standards of behaviour. I encourage children to see a relevance in what they are
learning and hope to enable them to analyse and communicate their ideas. A variety of
teaching techniques are used in my classroom with children working independently, in
groups, with younger children from other classes, and as a whole class, depending on the
activity. Their progress is carefully monitored and activities are designed to benefit the
individual. Often activities need both parental and community involvement. This helps the
children to understand their position in the community as a whole.
I have found that within a school there can be teachers with skills and talents that are
not developed to their full potential. I encourage my staff to share their skills
throughout our school and to liaise closely with other Primary and Secondary colleagues to
raise their awareness of how other schools teach.
I feel that schools are facing many changes at the moment and as Headteacher I encourage a
sympathetic approach to these changes. I endeavour to establish and maintain close links
with colleagues, parents and members of the local community to help overcome problems
encountered. I strongly feel that schools cannot work in isolation, but need to enlist the
resources of the local community to produce a better education for our children.
My reasons
for connecting the school to the Internet.
A very
important outcome of our Internet use.
I live with my husband Steve and my son Richard in the small country village of Charney Bassett
