Our Solar System

In Science this term we have been studying our Solar System.

* The Internet Research

Mr. Crisp worked with two of our juniors, Paul (10) and Russell (8) to research our Solar System using the Internet.
The following method was used to organise this lesson:

  1. The children were asked to write down what subjects they would like to find out about. This is important because it is so easy to get side tracked when doing research using the World Wide Web.
      • Paul wanted to find out about the Sun.
      • Russell wanted to find out about Mercury.
  2. Paul was asked to make notes of how they navigated, while Russell did the searching.
  3. They dialled in to our service provider and logged on to our LINKS page. From there they were able to go to the 'Yahoo' Internet search tool and Russell entered `Planets` as a search phrase. From the sites that were returned they found The Nine Planets described as - a Multimedia tour of the Solar System with pictures, text, sound and references to other Net resources about the solar system. This page offered a huge range of information about our solar system.
  4. Picture of the sun They chose to go to The Sun
  5. Picture of mercury They then went to find out about Mercury
  6. Before leaving they downloaded two very useful documents on Solar System Data and additional Solar System Data
  7. They logged off after having been on-line for about 20 mins. The research was very interesting, useful and surprisingly easy. They wrote a report together about the lesson and displayed it with the pictures and documents they had printed out.
