Class Visit to
Wyld Court - Hampstead Norreys
This term we have been studying rainforests. The Juniors visited the Wyld Court Rainforest at Hampstead Norreys in Berkshire. They were taken around three large greenhouses which offer different environments and humidity for the various flora, fauna and animal life found in the natural rainforests.
Our children have made a colourful display in the classroom with pictures, drawings and reports of the visit.
The Internet Research
Mr. Crisp sat down with two of our juniors, Bethia (10) and Rachael (9) to research rainforests using the Internet.
The following method was used to organise this lesson:
- They were asked to write down what subjects they would like to find out about. This is important because it is so easy to get side tracked when doing research using the World Wide Web.
- Bethia wanted to find out about parrots.
- Rachael wanted to find out how people live in the rainforest.
- Rachael was asked to make notes of how they navigated, while Bethia did the searching.
- They dialled in to our service provider and logged on to our LINKS page. From there they were able to go to the 'Web Crawler' database and Bethia entered `Parrot` as a search phrase. From the sites that were returned they visited the Rainforest Workshop Home Page and downloaded some pictures and a very interesting fact sheet about Native Peoples of Tropical Rainforests.
- They then went back to the 'Web Crawler' and entered the phrase `Rainforest`. Of the sites returned they chose one that appeared most likely to also tell them about the way people live in the rainforest and found a map of Surinam, South America on a very interesting page. They then visited The Rainforest Action Network page.
- They logged off after having been on-line for about 20 mins. The research was very interesting, useful and surprisingly easy. They wrote a report together about the lesson and displayed it with the pictures they had printed out.
You may contact Wyld Court Rainforest, Hampstead Norrys, Berkshire on 01635-200221 and they will be happy to forward a brochure about school or private visits. If you do visit please mention that you read about them on the Welford and Wickham School pages.
