FACE National Conference FACE

150 people attended the 2nd National Conference of FACE which was held in Warwickshire on 10th February.

Conference was a meeting of campaigners from all parts of the country, people who; have fought cuts in education over the past year; are determined to build the campaign up until the General Election.

Conference unanimously backed this statement:

"A crisis of under-resourcing afflicts British Education. FACE demands adequate and fair funding which will guarantee free, universal and equitable education for all. In particular, FACE demands:

  1. A National maximum class size of 30.
  2. Funding to meet the needs of all children including those with Special Needs.
  3. Adequate building and maintenance spending.
  4. Nursery education as a right for all children at 3 and 4 years of age.

FACE declares its intention to continue to campaign for these objectives."

Conference discussed the budget problems facing schools across the country. It is clear, that if the Government continues to expect schools to meet pay settlements from already tight budgets, this will be another year of cuts and diminishing standards.

We urge the Government to heed the advice of James Pawsey M.P. Chairman of the House of Commons Backbenchers Committee on Education and meet the pay settlements from central funds.

Conference urges school governors to look at the needs of their school and propose a budget according to what their school needs. Governors should not be silent accomplices of education cuts, rather they should be champions of adequate and fair funding. Experience shows that where Governors have set Needs Budgets, they have helped to publicise the crisis of underfunding.

We call upon our colleagues in NAGAM and NGC:

  1. to provide their members with information about the Needs Budget option.
  2. to join us in exposing the continuing attacks on school budgets.
